BLOG

Coming soon!

Mealtimes at home are not only a time to eat. They are a time spent creating memories together, with knowledge passed down from one generation to the next, where elders and children invest in each other with care. Follow the journey of six young people residing in Boon Lay, as they learn to document their home-cooked food recipes, discover their family history and a rich multicultural community heritage comprising Burmese, Chinese, Malay, and South Indian traditions.

These are the participants' quotes and recordings that aim to capture the participants’ reflections on the project as they chat with creative producer Lin Shiyun about their families, eating habits and their experience with photography. Other members of the creative team also appear sporadically in the recordings.

Ariel Nour Nadeera Ishika,

Mdm Chua

My grandmother used to cook a lot for the whole family to eat, before she had a stroke. Then our dabao (takeaway) life started, and we would sometimes argue on things like buying Western or Asian food from the stores.

Lim Lye Thiam

When my dabor zor (great grandfather) cooked this dish, he forgot to add sugar but he kept saying “I got add sugar! I got add sugar!” He is 90 years-old. When I was young, he cooked orh bak (black meat) for me and I really liked it.

Mohamad Aaron Rizqi, Mohamad Noor

When I think about someone who cooks for me, I think about my grandmother.  She wakes up very early to cook and she works the whole day. And my father. I want to learn how to cook curry chicken from him.

Muhammad Sulaiman, Asmidar

My mother wakes up at 5 o’clock, prays, and starts cooking. She wakes me up at 6.40am and I will sleep back, wake up, take a very long shower and take a very long time to get ready for school.

Sakthivel Shoban,

Shoban’s Family

I always see my grandparents from India using video call, but we don’t have a group photo. Now that I learnt photography, I want to buy a simple camera and take photos with my grandparents while they are still alive. I need to do.

Zay Linn Htet,

Grace Yin Thandar Aung

When I first grew up in Singapore, my kindergarten friends made fun of Burmese culture, so I got a little bit insecure. I told my mother and she said, “Don’t let anybody ruin your culture, because they have their own culture too.”
